Grace Kelly at the V&A: fa-bu-lous!

A few weeks ago my friend L. and I braced the stifling heat and trotted to the Victoria & Albert to see the Grace Kelly: Style Icon exhibit. I dressed up a bit for the occasion in a coral silk shift, purple croc ballerinas and my vintage Gucci Flora hobo. Even though my dresss was really light I felt like I was melting...

The exhibit is not very big, but it covers the three main stages in Grace Kelly's life: actress, bride, and princess. To be entirely honest I thought the fashion she turned to as a princess is much more interesting than the two other eras: the latter part of her life is all about Yves Saint-Laurent edgy fashion, Christian Dior bohemian gowns etc.

The exhibit also features the original Hermès handbag the Princess famously loved. I was quite surprised to see how well-loved and quite frankly battered this bag was, showing that she had used it for many many years. Apparently she was first pictured carrying this bag in 1956 when trying to hide her baby bump from photographers, and Hermès later honoured her by renaming the Sac à Dépêches the "Kelly".

Check out the Grace Kelly exhibition at the V&A in London, until the 26 September 2010.
