High street treasures: September 2011

Shopping on the high street is not easy... you have to be able to discern between the fast fashion junk (pony hair bustier dress anyone?) and the hidden gems. It's hard work, especially on the shop floor when the floor is filled with fashionistas all keen on finding the bargain of the week.

That's why I love to shop high street brands online. It's easy to spot the treasures, you can order in the comfort of your own home, and returns are very easy. A few words of caution however: read the description in full, as well as the sizing information (usually it is indicated which size the mannequin wears, I find this very handy), and finally pay attention to the materials details. If something says 100% polyester expect to walk with a whole load of static around you. Also if available try to read the review comments from previous buyers, as you'll get to hear first hand about how the piece fits, the quality of the fabric etc.

And remember: when you find something that's perfect the satisfaction of having paid almost as little as a couple of days worth of Starbucks coffees is a lovely feeling.

Here are my finds of the moment:
1. New Look lace peplum top  £22.99 http://www.newlook.com/
2. River Island faux leather trousers £40 http://www.riverisland.com/
3. Warehouse bird print silk dress £65 http://www.warehouse.co.uk/
4. River Island platform slingbacks £60 http://www.riverisland.com/
