The Royal Ascot style edit

As promised, here are a few thoughts on what to wear for Royal Ascot this year, following the recently updated dress code: remember, no strapless, no minis, a hat with a base of four inches minimum, and a trouser suit only if the jacket and trousers are matchy. Follow these simple rules and you should be fine!

I've picked three styles which are classic staples of this type of formal events: Pretty in Pastel, Bright and Beautiful, and Monochrome Elegance. My favourite is the Pastel edit, but before we start here are just three rules of my own that I'd add to the ones published by the organisers of Royal Ascot:

1) For such occasions, unless you are a well-known eccentric, it is best to keep with classic looks and lines... that Ipad hat is fun, but it sure isn't elegant or pretty;

2) Just because you are sticking to classic elegance doesn't mean you need to channel your 75-year old great-aunt Mathilda, dressing elegantly and for your age is not impossible!

3) If you're wearing a hat, lose the sunglasses; the odds are the sun won't be out anyways (this is England after all) but even if it is as bright as Tuscany in August, please do refrain from this combination, there is really no nice way to style it.

Now for the shopping, I hope you like my picks!
