Wednesday's beauty essential: Skinceuticals Blemish + Age Defense Serum

I used to think that skin breakouts belonged in the age of driving lessons and awkward first kiss attempts, and in fact I was feeling quite smug at having escaped my teenage years with a relatively unblemished skin. Tsk tsk, how naive of me...

Then, over a decade later, karma has finally come to bite me in the face: last fall, my skin started showing some signs of serious confusion, with fine lines on the forehead, a couple of age spots around the cheeks, and, I couldn't believe my eyes, a few stubborn and very recurring spots around the chin. Why me!?!

Surely wrinkles and hyperpigmentation were a sufficient curse to take me through my thirties, why did I need those sebaceous nuisances to come and make my life a misery (tragic, wouldn't you say?) At first I thought that upping the frequency of visits to my Bliss facialist would suffice, but no, she explained my skin was stressed and confused and needed a little help. With no job or children to run after, what does my skin do that stresses it so, I asked!

Philosophical questions aside, my facialist recommended I try SkinCeuticals Blemish + Age Defense Serum in addition to my usual skin routine. The serum combines anti-ageing glycolic and diolic acids with salycilic and citric acids which reduce blemishes and accelerate exfoliation. I was a bit concerned at first that my skin would react to the product by getting even worse, but I was nicely surpriced. Within a couple of weeks the offending pimples had gone and I rarely ever get one these days, and my whole skin is feeling smoother and my pores are most definitely tighter.

The only downside is that it has quite a  high alcohol content, and so somedays it leaves my skin a bit dry; so I make sure to top it off with a light moisturiser to keep flakey skin at bay. I've been using this serum for a few months now and using just 4-5 drops per use, a little bottle seems to outlive most of my other beauty products.
