I was in the US for part of this last week, and reading a couple of fashion magazines on my flight over (we did have 4.5 hours delay on the way to Boston, so I had time to read the FT, the WSJ, a rating report, half of a novel, Vogue US and InStyle US, and watch The Great Gatsby... I guess that's the silver lining of delayed flights, they give you time you didn't expect to get in your day!), it struck me how formal corporate America is when it comes to office wear. One of the work styling articles said that fishnets in the workplace were a big no-no, whilst another advocated steering far away from animal print.
I am so lucky to be working on this side of the pond: just because you've decided to make a career climbing the multi-step corporate ladder and becoming a big deal maker, if you're in Europe you can still manage to have your own personal style in the office. Why keep your studded Loubies for week-end wear only?! Apparently the US workplace is just far more conservative, and an outfit like last Tuesday's would have never worked. Check it out.
It started off with classic cigarette-cut trousers and a very work-appropriate white button-down shirt with sophisticated French cuffs, boring enough... But of course little old me always strives to go a little crazy, especially with the accessories: for this my little Kitty heels are amazing, they are such a talking point and make everyone's mood lift. Even my boss commented on how quirky they were (with a smile, not a scowl!). My Fauré Le Page tote is just a tote, perfect for hauling A4 files from meeting to meeting, but the scale design is so much better than a block-colour, it's just more fun!
And obviously I'm starting to wear coats again... I am so in love with this kimono-style oversized jacket that I bought years ago, it's the perfect half-season coat, not too warm, but super snug and comfy.
Before you go, here are my outfit's details:
- Trousers in navy stretch twill, J.Crew
- French cuff pure white cotton shirt, Pure Collection
- Belted oversize coat, by Paul & Joe (AW 2009), this Carven one is close
- Kitty heeled pumps in blue velvet with gold embroidery, Charlotte Olympia
- Tote bag in waxed canvas, Fauré Le Page
Voilà. Enjoy the week-end!
